New St. Joseph Altar Cookbook

From the Times Picayune:
According to Our Lady of Lourdes St. Joseph Altar Ministry Chairwoman Mary Leonard, this year it will offer the largest cookbook to date at the altar. It contains more than 100 recipes for the traditional cookies and foods, many of which have been handed down for generations, she said.

"It's a collage of recipes from people who have come here over the years," she said.

Their first printing of 150 copies sold out quickly, so they are in the process of reprinting. The cookbooks will be $5 each. Mary is asking that people write to her. Include your name, address, phone number, and the number of cookbooks you are interested in. You should probably figure on $5 or so for shipping. Do not send money at this time! When they reprint, they will contact and collect the money/orders.

Our 2009 St. Joseph Altar

I have posted some photos of our family's 2009 St. Joseph Altar. This year we used our upright piano for the base of the altar. The bench is actually the lowest tier. This was a nice size , and not too overwhelming of a space to fill. Isabel made the cross cake and Crown of Thorns. Ida made her traditional giant fish cookie. Maxine helped me with choosing the flowers. Everyone had a hand in setting up and arranging, and Audrey and Crozet lit lots of candles. We had a delicious feast day meal of crawfish etoufee followed by those lovely desserts. Although I hate to do it, I will be taking the Altar down today. Viva San Giuseppe!

A Parent's Prayer to St. Joseph

Esther has posted A Parent's Prayer to St. Joseph.

Little steps for St. Joseph

Charlotte has solved the problem families have with sharing the items on their small home altars with the less fortunate.
. . . if you try to share a dish of manicotti and some poached fish with a food pantry today, you will be denied. . . Sardines, Italian style green beans, canned tomatoes, biscotti, sparkling grape juice, orzo, animal crackers and more. Everything, except the strawberries, will be gathered up tomorrow and taken to the food pantry on our way to Mass.

Great idea! Read her blog post, Our little steps for St. Joseph.

Sicilian tradition keeps growing

The DesMoines Register has a great article on the Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa's 12th annual St. Joseph Altar. Even the Virtual St. Joseph Altar got a mention:
According to the Virtual St. Joseph Altar Web site, the tradition began during a famine when the people of Sicily prayed to their patron saint, Joseph, for relief. When the famine ended, they prepared a table with foods they had harvested. After paying homage to St. Joseph, they distributed the food to the less fortunate.

Pope Benedict reflects on St. Joseph

Excerpted from an address Benedict XVI delivered yesterday at the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Cameroon:

Speaking to the crowd and to his disciples, Jesus declared: "You have only one Father" (Mt 23:9). There is but one fatherhood, that of God the Father, the one Creator of the world, "of all that is seen and unseen". Yet man, created in the image of God, has been granted a share in this one paternity of God (cf. Eph 3:15). Saint Joseph is a striking case of this, since he is a father, without fatherhood according to the flesh. He is not the biological father of Jesus, whose Father is God alone, and yet he lives his fatherhood fully and completely. To be a father means above all to be at the service of life and growth. Saint Joseph, in this sense, gave proof of great devotion. For the sake of Christ he experienced persecution, exile and the poverty which this entails. He had to settle far from his native town. His only reward was to be with Christ. His readiness to do all these things illustrates the words of Saint Paul: "It is Christ the Lord whom you serve" (Col 3:24).

What is important is not to be a useless servant, but rather a "faithful and wise servant". The pairing of the two adjectives is not by chance. It suggests that understanding without fidelity, and fidelity without wisdom, are insufficient. One quality alone, without the other, would not enable us to assume fully the responsibility which God entrusts to us.

. . .

The life of Saint Joseph, lived in obedience to God’s word, is an eloquent sign for all the disciples of Jesus who seek the unity of the Church. His example helps us to understand that it is only by complete submission to the will of God that we become effective workers in the service of his plan to gather together all mankind into one family, one assembly, one "ecclesia". Dear friends from other Christian confessions, this quest for unity among the disciples of Christ represents a great challenge for us. It leads us first of all to be converted to the Person of Christ, to let ourselves be drawn more and more to him. In him, we are called to acknowledge one another as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father. During this year dedicated to the Apostle Paul, the great herald of Jesus Christ and the Apostle of the Nations, let us all turn towards him so as to hear and learn "the faith and truth" which are the deepest reasons for the unity of Christ’s disciples.

Eight Promises of St. Joseph

1. God will grant special graces to those that do not know me, to have a great devotion to me.

2. God will bless all who are married and the blessing in their family will be without limit.

3. Those married and without children will be blessed with offspring.

4. God will give special graces to be delivered from temptations and the attacks of the devil.

5. They shall have a good and happy death.

6. They shall overcome their trials and tribulations.

7. God shall grant them immediate help when they invoke my intercession, for the demons have extreme dread of the invocation of my name.

8. For all those who embrace a St. Joseph cenacle, they shall obtain a more fervent love for Jesus and a true devotion to Most Holy Mary.

In addition to the special favour….; for which we plead in this novena, grant that we may attribute to God the glory of all things, that we may love the humble and hidden life, that we may not desire any other position than the one given us by Providence and that we may always be a docile instrument in the hands of God. Amen Saint Joseph, pray for us!

Virtual Altar in St. Louis Review

The Virtual St. Joseph Altar is featured in this week's St. Louis Review:

Homeschool mom honors saint with ‘virtual’ altar
by Jennifer Brinker, Review Staff Writer

For Evann Duplantier, creating an altar in honor of the feast of St. Joseph on March 19 is a "labor of love."

But that’s where any "laboring" on her part comes to a halt. Duplantier, a homeschooling mom of six, has honored the patron saint of workers with a virtual St. Joseph Altar on the Web at thankevann.com/stjoseph.

The beauty of the online altar, said the member of St. Anselm Parish in Creve Coeur, is that it doesn’t involve the sometimes days-long process of setting up an altar and baking breads, pastries and other food for it.

"Your kitchen stays clean, and you don’t have to leave your house," she said.

The St. Joseph Altar, sometimes called a table, is a centuries-old tradition that started with Sicilian farmers who prayed to St. Joseph at the time of a severe famine.

Their prayers were answered, and the families held an open house by placing food on a St. Joseph Table.

Duplantier and her family started the virtual altar 10 years ago, partly as a way to relive her childhood in New Orleans, where the tradition has long held popular with Sicilian immigrants and their descendants. The tradition has caught on with others, too.

"I’m not Italian," said Duplantier, "but my grandmother used to go to the altars when I was a little kid. People would open up their houses, and it would be pretty amazing, the things they set up in their dining rooms." More elaborate altars are sometimes set up in churches, restaurants and other public places, too, she said.

Duplantier worked years ago she with other families in the St. Louis Catholic Homeschool Association to set up a real-life altar. But the effort turned out to be too much to handle year after year, she said.

"You needed help with the food and gathering other things," she said. The tradition is that "everything has to be obtained by begging — not buying everything."

When Duplantier, a former art director, and some of her children set up their first virtual altar in 1999, the website included a basic altar, which is traditionally set up in three tiers to represent the Holy Trinity.

A statue of St. Joseph is placed on the top tier, usually surrounded by bread, flowers, greenery and fruit. Those who make an offering to the virtual altar can choose from about a dozen items, including bread, fish, pastries, fruit and candles. Offerings can be made up through the March 19 feast day.

On the website, visitors can request prayers for deceased loved ones. A separate message board is open all year long for other prayer requests.

"This comes from the tradition of praying for deceased people at the altar," said Duplantier. "Pictures of deceased loved ones are usually set up on family altars."

Other features include a section on the history of St. Joseph altars, images of the saint for downloading, St. Joseph-themed coloring pages, recipes and links to other resources. Duplantier also has set up a blog at stjosephaltar.blogspot.com.

New this year is a link with instructions on how children can make a three-dimensional St. Joseph altar out of paper. Helping her with the project were two of her daughters, 16-year-old Isabel and 13-year-old Maxine.

Duplantier said she receives visitors from all over the world, including Italy, Brazil and New York, to name a few. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Duplantier said she also noticed an increase in visitors from New Orleans.

As she works on the site around March each year, Duplantier noted that her children are hard at work setting up a real altar in the family dining room, a tradition that the family has had for about a decade and a half.

"Sometimes it has been a surprise for me," she said. "It started out very tiny — a little cake and cookies and a statue of St. Joseph. It’s gotten a little bigger every year."

Novena to Saint Joseph - Day 3

Glorious Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, to you we raise our hearts and hands to implore your powerful intercession to obtain, from the benign heart of Jesus, all the helps and graces necessary for our spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly for the grace of a happy death and this special favour we now request . . . O guardian of the Word Incarnate, we feel animated with confidence that your prayers on our behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. O Glorious Saint Joseph, through the love you bear to Jesus Christ and for the glory of His name, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions. Amen.

Day 3
Blessed Saint Joseph, enkindle in our cold hearts a spark of your charity. May God be always the first and only object of our affections. Keep our souls always in sanctifying grace and, if we should be so unhappy as to lose it, give us the strength to recover it immediately by a sincere repentance. Help us to such a love of our God as will always keep us united to Him. Amen. O glorious St. Joseph, through the love you bear to Jesus Christ and for the glory of His name, hear our prayers and obtain our petitions.

Redemptoris Custos

on the person and mission of Saint Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church

Apostolic Exhortation of Pope John Paul II, on the person and mission of St. Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church. Given 15 August, 1989.

INTRODUCTION

"Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife" (cf. Mt 1 :24).

Inspired by the Gospel, the Fathers of the Church from the earliest centuries stressed that just as St. Joseph took loving care of Mary and gladly dedicated himself to Jesus Christ's upbringing,(1) he likewise watches over and protects Christ's Mystical Body, that is, the Church, of which the Virgin Mary is the exemplar and model.

On the occasion of the centenary of Pope Leo XIII's Encyclical Epistle Quamquam Pluries,( 2) and in line with the veneration given to St. Joseph over the centuries, I wish to offer for your consideration, dear brothers, and sisters, some reflections concerning him "into whose custody God entrusted his most precious treasures."( 3) I gladly fulfill this pastoral duty so that all may grow in devotion to the Patron of the Universal Church and in love for the Savior whom he served in such an exemplary manner.

In this way the whole Christian people not only will turn to St. Joseph with greater fervor and invoke his patronage with trust, but also will always keep before their eyes his humble, mature way of serving and of "taking part" in the plan of salvation.( 4)

I am convinced that by reflection upon the way that Mary's spouse shared in the divine mystery, the Church-on the road towards the future with all of humanity-will be enabled to discover ever anew her own identity within this redemptive plan, which is founded on the mystery of the Incarnation.

This is precisely the mystery in which Joseph of Nazareth "shared" like no other human being except Mary, the Mother of the Incarnate Word. He shared in it with her; he was involved in the same salvific event; he was the guardian of the same love, through the power of which the eternal Father "destined us to be his sons through Jesus Christ" (Eph 1:5).

Novena to Saint Joseph - Day 2

Amen.

Day 2
O Blessed Saint Joseph, tender-hearted father, faithful guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of God, we pray and beseech you to offer to God the Father, His divine son, bathed in blood on the Cross for sinners, and through the thrice holy name of Jesus obtain for us of the eternal Father the favour for which we implore your intercession . . . Amid the splendours of eternity, forget not the sorrows of those who pray, those who weep; stay the almighty arm which smites us, that by your prayers and those of your most holy spouse, the Heart of Jesus may be moved to pity and to pardon. Amen. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

St. Joseph's Parade

On Saturday, March 14, New Orleanians will honor St. Joseph in their own special way as The Italian American Marching Club parades through the middle of the French Quarter. Marchers, dressed in black tuxedos, proceed to parade through the French Quarter. Thousands of locals and tourists line the streets to take part in this celebration. Marchers hand out silk flowers and fava beans, and dance and sing with the bystanders.

Grand Marshall of this year's parade is Frankie Avalon!

The parade begins at 6 p.m. at Canal Street and Chartres; proceeds down Chartres to St. Peter; left on St. Peter to Royal Street; right at Bienville to Bourbon Street; Another right onto Bourbon Street down to St. Ann. Finally, the parade turns onto St. Ann and back onto Royal. A St. Joseph Altar float accompanies the marchers along their route.

Also: The Italian American Marching Club has published a list of 2009 St. Joseph Altars in Louisiana. Altars are categorized by Parish.
